Sian Edwards and Tom Bark both turned in powerful displays to win the senior titles at this year’s Northamptonshire Cross Country Championships hosted by Kettering Town Harriers at Wicksteed Park.

The meeting, held in persistent rain on a quagmire of a course, saw Edwards (Swansea Harriers) lift the Senior Women’s title for the third consecutive time with a typical gutsy performance which saw her register the biggest winning margin of the day. The Geddington 25-year-old, who has now won the title four times, finished some 400m ahead of Higham Harrier Rachel Cave who improved three places on last year to clinch the runner up spot after pulling away from Aldershot’s Melanie Wood in the final third of the race.

In a repeat of 12 months ago Wood retained her Under 20 title ahead of Rosanna Andrews (Rugby & Northampton AC) while running well to take the bronze was Kettering Town Harrier Claudia Kelsall.

R&N took team gold while Harborough AC, fronted by the senior bronze medallist Hannah Eveleigh and supported by Karen Brooks and Yvonne Scarrott, just edged out Wellingborough & District AC to take the silver.

Kelly Barnett in sixth showed a big improvement from her 17th place of last year when she fronted the Wellingborough team who also had Harriet Woolley and Louise Kemp in the scoring squad.

Bark’s late decision to run following an Achilles injury which has restricted his training over the Christmas period proved the right one as he chalked up his fifth title to move to equal third alongside Hughie Boyle and behind Bill McKim (eight) and Pat Gilsenan (nine) on the list of most individual wins since the race was first run in 1931.

Early leader and pre race favourite Jacob Allen (R&N), who defeated Bark by a minute in a Birmingham League race a month ago, was overhauled by the Coventry Godiva Harrier just before the halfway point. Once in front and relishing the muddy conditions he eased away to finish 200m clear of Allen whose reward for a gallant effort secured him the Under 20 title in front of club colleague Robert Male and Kettering Harrier Lewis Hayes.

Three times Under 20 champion and outright winner two years ago Rory Grant (Birchfield Harriers) took the Senior silver ahead of Wellingborough’s Stuart Nelson while R&N won the Ernest Thompson trophy with their first team victory since 2010.

In a close battle for the runner-up spot Kettering Harriers just edged out Silson Joggers and Wellingborough with new club Higham Harriers fifth.

Both Under 15 champions of last year moved up to Under 17 level with equal success as Kirsty Goddard (R&N) lifted the women’s title and Kettering Harrier Josh Cara the men’s.

The former led from the gun to record an eight second victory over the much improved Jess Gordon with Daventry’s Emma Bond a distant third. However Gordon did take gold when, with support from Abigail Coleman and Gemma Vaughan, her club - Kettering Harriers - retained the team title ahead of R&N.

Cara was in total control and with a superb front running performance he finished almost 200m clear of Daventry’s Jack Bond. Jack Hope had a solid run to take the bronze and along with sixth placed Edward Cannell helped Kettering to clinch team gold ahead of the holders R&N.

When Isham’s Tabatha Walford, the pre race favourite, pulled out approaching the halfway distance in the Under 15 Girls race after going over on her ankle the way was cleared for Emer Wintsch (R&N) to race to victory. She eventually finished 38 seconds in front of Claudia Nevett whose effort along with that of Sophie Moss and Beth Gordon helped Kettering to narrowly defeat holders R&N in the team contest.

Guilsborough School’s Niamh Watson ran well to win the bronze when finishing a clear third.

The corresponding boys’ race looked set to be decided on a sprint finish between Oskar Potomski and Daniel Hynes but failed to materialise when the former took the unfortunate decision to head out for another lap leaving the way clear for the Milton Keynes runner to land the title ahead of last year’s Under 13 champion Joshua Lay (R&N) with the early leader Ethan Mehmet of the host club securing the bronze.

The unlucky Potomski rectified his mistake to finish fourth and gain some reward when his club R&N won the team race.

As expected the Under 13 Girls race soon developed into a battle between Poppy Carmichael (R&N) and Kettering’s much improved Emily Williams with the former’s late surge in the closing stages proving decisive as she turned last year’s bronze into gold to record a six second victory. Amy Walker finished third and helped R&N to easily retain the team title with Kettering finishing second ahead of Corby.

The opposite boys race produced the closest finish of the day when Adam Caulfield (Northampton School for Boys) just edged out Adam Searle after both runners were credited with the same time. With Joe Musgrove taking third the runner-up gained some consolation when R&N successfully defended their crown while the battle for the runner-up spot was a much close affair with Kettering fronted by a good effort from fifth placed Henri Codling narrowly edging out Corby, who were led home by eighth placed Adam McCrone.

Archie Parkinson recorded Corby’s only victory of the day when in an exciting finish he held off the challenge of Harborough’s George Eveleigh with two seconds to spare when winning the Under 11 Boys event.

Boughton Primary’s James Barritt took bronze as R&N easily retained the team title from Kettering, whose top runner Hal Robinson came seventh.

Holly Walker followed by Elysia Lay and Amelia McMurtrie secured a clean sweep of the individual medals for R&N in the Under 11 Girls race while team runners-up, Kettering, were led home by fifth placed Daisy Robinson.
