Breaking clear in the closing stages, Tim Smith (Welland Valley CC) soloed to victory in Swindon RC’s 46-mile Toachim Vets/Mstina Series road race at Little Somerford, in Wiltshire.

Smith, from Boughton, drew from the experience of club-mate Phil Rayner in the early laps of the age 40-49 veterans event to put himself in a position from which to launch the winning move – Rayner himself just missing out to Robin Parker (East Grinstead CC) in the uphill sprint for second place with the pair filling the top two places in the 45-49 category.

Stephen Bunn (Welland Valley CC) finished third in the age 55-59 race, and Northampton’s Don Parry (Team Corley Cycles) proved strongest in a four-up sprint to win the over-60s race, also over 46 miles.

MG-Maxifuel Pro Cycling – whose team includes Ecton’s Liam Stones - were lying sixth in the overall standings after the opening two rounds of the televised Pearl Izumi Tour Series, contested by the country’s leading professional squads, in Kircaldy and Durham.

A5 Rangers CC are holding two ‘come and try it’ 5-mile time trials, open to all riders over the age of 12, on Tuesdays, May 28 and June 4 (both 6.45pm).

There will be prizes for under-16, under-18 and senior male and female novice riders, while the second event will also have prizes for the best improvement in those categories. There will also be a fastest novice parent and child combined award.

Car parking and refreshments will be just off the old A43, approximately half a mile north of Silverstone, and all types of cycle are welcome as long as they are in roadworthy condition. Riders under the age of 18 must wear a cycle helmet and, along with their parents, have signed a parental consent form which will be available on the night.

The entry fee for is £2, and prizes have been donated by Towcester Cycle Servicing and Waitrose Towcester. Further details are available from Dave Gill on 07834 147478.

Stewart Wilson (Bonito Squadra Corse) clocked 54-05 for ninth place in High Wycombe CC’s ‘25’ at Marlow, victory going to Peter Lawrence (Team MDT) in 50.50.

Slowing by half a minute from the previous week in the wet and windy conditions, Tim Smith (22.28) chalked up another victory in Welland Valley CC’s series on the 10-mile Thorpe Langton course ahead of Phil Rayner (23.51) and Lee Edmonds (24.29).

Other times: Adrian Killworth 24.52, Lawrence Cox 25.07, Peter Bentley 26.07, Jon Durnin 26.43, Mitch James 27.00, Louis Killworth 27.55, Ray Taylor 28.18, Tom French 28.29, Vic Barnett 28.45, Simon Ward 29.20, John Ridgway 30.30, Richard Stannard 31.17, Tom Evans 31.41, Andrew Weatherby 32.11, Keith Hallam 33.41.

Northampton’s Will Goulbourne (Team V-Sprint Racing) finished sixth in the Central Region road race championships over six laps of the 15-mile Great Milton circuit, near Thame.

Goulbourne was in a break of a dozen riders who went clear on the opening lap and, five minutes up at one point, stayed away to contest the finish – three of them coming down in a pile-up inside the last 200 metres as Mike Smith (Team Corley Cycles) landed the title.
