NORTHAMPTONSHIRE’S men were a match for some of the best regional golfers during the first day of the Eastern Counties tournament at Seacroft before eventually finishing in fifth spot.
With six consecutive Anglian League wins under their belts, Northants made a confident start as they took four of the five games against Suffolk and beat Norfolk 3-2.
Things got even better in the afternoon for Jim Campbell’s side as they beat Essex by the odd point in five and also got the better of Bedfordshire by the scoreline 3½-1½.
Going into the final day as the leaders, Northants beat Cambridgeshire 3-2 in the morning but were on the wrong end of a 4-1 defeat at the hands of Leicestershire.
Needing an excellent display in the afternoon matches to snatch the title for the first time, Northamptonshire ran out of steam as they collected just a half point against Lincs and Notts.
