Rachel Cave continued her good form of late when she won the Senior Women’s race by the narrowest of margins in the third round of the Apex Chiltern Cross Country League. The Division 2 match at Slough saw Cave just edge out St Albans’ Lucy Waterlow after the pair were credited with the same time of 22.04.

Cave’s effort helped her club - Team Balancise - to finish fifth in the team standings with top spot going to St Albans Striders. Also performing well for the Higham Ferrers club was Elaine O’Sullivan, who ran the 5.2km distance in 23.51 to finish 12th and Julie Wargent, who came 15th in 24.15 while other finishers for the club were Claire Hale (60th in 31.44), Margaret Bond (61st in 32.14), Tina Brayford (63rd in 33.14) and Carrie Wright (68th in 35.50).

In the men’s race over 8.4 km Team Balancise - led home by Dan Doherty - came sixth as St Albans were again victorious. Doherty produced a solid performance when he clocked 31.30 to finish 15th while also in action for the club were Francis Hale (36th in 32.59), Dave Hutchings (52nd in 34.11), Martin Hamilton (59th in 35.01), Philip Devereuax (69th in 36.11), Darren Gibson (73rd in 36.43) and Darren Ginn (117th in 49.31).
