Northamptonshire’s Caitlin McClatchey has made it through to the final of the women’s 200m freestyle final at the Olympic Games tonight.

The former Northampton Swimming Club member, who was raised in Brixworth, finished second in her semi-final at the Aquatic Centre last night.

McClatchey, who is now at Loughborough University, turned for home in first place but was eventually overtaken by world champion Federica Pellegrini.

But McClatchey qualified in sixth with a time of 1:57.33.

She said: “I could hear the crowd the whole way through, it was incredible.

“I have had a really tough two years and thought about quitting but I am really enjoying it now.

“I have got a fantastic team at Loughborough University and without them I couldn’t have done it.”

It is her second successive Olympic final appearance, after she finished sixth in the 200m freestyle in Beijing four years ago.

In 2006, McClatchey won gold in the 200m and 400m freestyle events at the Commonwealth Games.
