Kettering’s Kyren Wilson superb season continued as he became the first player to book a place in the semi-finals of the 188BET Champion of Champions event at Coventry’s Ricoh Arena.
Wilson earned his place in the competition after winning the Shanghai Masters in September.
And, like in the final in Shanghai, he beat Judd Trump 4-2 in his first group three match yesterday (Tuesday).
Chinese youngster Zhou Yuelong stunned world champion Stuart Bingham in the deciding frame of their semi-final to reach the best of 11 group final.
Zhou took the opening frame of the final but Wilson responded with a break of 84 and then
one of 78 to move into the lead.
Wilson extended that advantage to 3-1 and the two players exchanged frames in the next two to see the Kettering man holding a 4-2 advantage.
Zhou hit back with a break of 68 but Wilson again extended his advantage with the help of a 49 break in frame eight and the Northants potter made it to Saturday’s semi-final stage taking the ninth frame for a 6-3 success.
“It got a little bit scrappy towards the end but that is understandable,” said Wilson.
“I was pleased to get over the line. Zhou is a great talent and he looks like a very good player.
“I am here to win the tournament, like every player. Everybody in the tournament is already a winner so I have as much right as every other player to win.”
