CORBY ABC’s Simon Barclay goes into this weekends GB Championships at the Troxy in London as odds-on favourite after Warren Baister withdrew from the competition.
The Sunderland-based boxer was devestated at losing 19-5 in the second series of the Olympic qualifiers which were held in Turkey in April.
And in the words of his club coach Joe Purvis: “Warren just can’t get motivated after his disappointing exit and will not be appearing in London in the summer.”
With no representative from Wales, it’s now left for Barclay to meet Scotland’s Steven Lavelle in a straight final – a contest he is very capable of winning on his international debut.
A win will secure a six-month assessment spell on limited funding with the GB squad in preparation for the 2014 Commonwealth Games, which are being held in Glasgow.
Baister’s withdrawal could signal the end of his amateur career and follow the exodus to the paid ranks with many of his GB colleagues who failed to qualify.
