Kettering Town Harriers did the business in the final Midland Senior League at Worcester to clinch promotion as champions when they finished a close second to Halesowen but ahead of the host club, who will join them in Division Three next season.

Ending his league campaign in fine style was team manager Ashley McClintock (pictured), who smashed through the 50 second barrier for the first time when he knocked half a second from his previous best with a winning performance in the 400m. He raced home in 49.8 to easily defeat Tipton’s Jack Imray (50.9) and received excellent support from Ed Cherry, who ran well to help clinch maximum points for the Harriers when winning the B race in 51.6.

Other victories on the male side came from Matthew Peleszok, who putted 11.31m in the shot and Jamie Milne, who clocked 18.1 in the 110m hurdles.

Matt Stewart (800m), Bradley Fox (long jump) and Pete Mills, who threw a season’s best of 40.92m behind Banbury’s Alex Brown (45.36m) in the javelin, which also saw Aidan Bailey perform well to win the B string with 32.26m, all secured runner up spots.

The Harriers’ heroine was the ever dependable multi-eventer Niamh Bailey who, on a busy day, chalked up four individual successes with her first coming when she leapt a season’s best of 5.31m to defeat Shrewsbury’s Anna Kelly (4.98m) in the long jump. Further wins came when she clocked 16.2 over the 100m hurdles, cleared 1.60m in the high jump and ran 26.2 over 200m and then also putted 8.49m to secure top points in the B shot, an event in which Daisy Gilbert with 8.96m took second in the A string which was won on 9.59m by Tipton’s Lynsey Stevenson.

Gilbert was more at home in her main event, the hammer, in which she threw a winning effort of 34.12m to finish ahead of Halesowen’s Catherine Dempsey (33.33m) while fellow Under 17 Jess Gordon ran well to clock her second fastest time over 1500m when she finished second to Tipton’s Amie Filhern (4.51.5) in 4.56.6.
