The Steelmen’s relegation from the Vanarama National League North was officially confirmed after the draw at Edgeley Park.

But boss Wright was able to reflect on what he described as “a positive week” after he watched his team come back from 2-0 down with Greg Mills’ stoppage-time penalty earning them a point after Ben Milnes had scored their first.

Wright believes the players are doing all they can to stake a claim for next season as he plots an immediate return to National League North.

And he said: “I have been resigned to relegation and I just wanted the boys to go out there and play to their capabilities, play as a team and play good football. They’ve done that in the last two games.

“They seem really hungry to go and fight for the club and if we’d had all those qualities all season then maybe we wouldn’t have been relegated.

“I really thought we showed the same sort of team spirit as last season.

“We challenged the players to go and produce good back-to-back performances and that’s what they have done.

“It is a very young group and when you look at the squad, the average age of it is very young but there were some really pleasing performances.

“Danny Draper is playing like a seasoned pro, Greg Mills has got another goal and Ben Milnes covered every blade of grass.

“It’s been a positive week, there are some good players being kept out of the team and lads are staking their claims for deals for next season.

“Liam (assistant-manager O’Neill) and I have been talking a lot and we have been coming up with the same names of players for next season and there aren’t many who aren’t around this club at the moment.”

The Steelmen are now preparing for their final home game of the season when they take on Stalybridge Celtic at Steel Park on Saturday.
