Ian Sampson is looking forward to taking on a Birmingham City XI on Monday as he begins to turn his full attention to the first game of the Blue Square Bet North campaign.
Corby Town’s latest success in a so far unbeaten pre-season programme came in the Bob Cummings Memorial Cup match as they beat town rivals Stewarts & Lloyds 4-1 at Occupation Road on Wednesday night.
And Sampson is beginning to look forward to the first game of the new season against Vauxhall Motors at Steel Park.
“Pre-season seems to have dragged on a bit,” the Steelmen boss said.
“We have one more friendly that we hope will go well and then we have to start thinking about putting the right team out on the pitch next Saturday.
“It was a testing workout on a difficult pitch at S&L.
“It was extremely competitive and I was impressed by the way S&L acquitted themselves.
“We got the chance to look at one or two more players and it’s always nice to get another win.”
Skipper Paul Malone and striker Josh Moreman were on target in the game but it was Avelino Vieira who caught the eye with a double strike to add to his goal in the 2-0 win at Bedford Town.
And Sampson feels the recent form of Vieira, who signed from Peterborough Northern Star this summer, has been a “nice surprise”.
“Avelino has done well for us,” Sampson added.
“He scored after coming on at Bedford and he got another couple on Wednesday.
“His form in the last two games has been a nice surprise.”
