An improved performance was not enough to prevent Corby Town suffering another home defeat in the Blue Square Bet North as they went down 3-2 to Worcester City.

Worcester made the early running and after Fabian Speiss had tipped over a Gregg Mills shot, Michael Taylor volleyed them ahead in the eighth minute.

The Steelmen’s response was good and Tyrone Amory was inches away from an equaliser when he just failed to connect with Andy Hall’s low cross.

However, there was no denying Hall on 18 minutes as he equalised with a superb 20-yard volley after the Royals failed to clear from throw-in.

Corby threatened again on 28 minutes as Tom McGowan’s shot was parried by the keeper and Paul Malone shot wide from the resulting scramble.

At the other end, Speiss did well to take the ball off Taylor’s toe as the striker bore down on goal while Mills saw a superb strike crash off the bar on the stroke of half-time.

Mills was close again at the start of the second half with two efforts wide of the mark before he was fouled by Hall in the box on 62 minutes to give Worcester a penalty that Tom Thorley just converted, although Speiss was unlucky not to keep it out.

Hall almost atoned immediately when he pounced on a poor pass by Jacob Rowe, but his cross was behind Gary King and Worcester were able to clear.

And having survived that scare, the Royals then sealed the points on 78 minutes when Speiss came out of his box to clear but only scuffed the ball to Phil Green, who fired the ball back into an empty net from 40 yards.

King grabbed a second late on from the penalty spot for Corby after Rob Elvins’ foul on Alex Bolt, but there was no time to find an equaliser.
