Kettering Town opened their pre-season campaign with a 1-0 victory over Southend Manor at Nene Park on Saturday.

Phil Ifil was the only contracted player to feature in the friendly as boss John Beck ran the rule over a number of trialists including former Poppies midfielder Liam McDonald and Elliott Ben – the younger brother of former Ipswich Town striker Marcus.

In the end a late goal from trialist Chris Hughes was enough to seal Kettering’s win in front of a crowd of 247.

Elsewhere, ChromaSport & Trophies United Counties League Division One side Burton Park Wanderers also got their pre-season under way as they drew 2-2 against Kirby Muxlow.
