Thrapston Town and Raunds Town both booked their places in the preliminary round of the FA Cup later this month as the ‘Road to Wembley’ got under way yesterday (Saturday).
Early ChromaSport & Trophies United Counties League Division One leaders Thrapston secured the local bragging rights as they claimed a 2-1 success at newly-promoted Premier Division side Rothwell Corinthians to book themselves an away clash at Evo-Stik Southern League Division One Central outfit Bedford Town.
Ben Morgan set them on their way from the penalty spot after 15 minutes but Corinthians drew level through Jordan Henson just past the half-hour.
However, Thrapston sealed their place in the next round thanks to Jedd Whiteman’s sixth goal of the season on 67 minutes.
At Kiln Park, Raunds edged out Crawley Green 1-0 to move into the preliminary round.
Glenn Turner hit the only goal of the game on 31 minutes to send the Shopmates through.
Another Division One side, Whitworth, were knocked out as they went down 3-0 at home to Premier Division team Northampton Spencer.
Alex Lowery struck in the first half and two goals in four second-half minutes from Jacob Gartland and Ryan Lovell secured Spencer’s place in the next round.
Desborough Town went out at the first hurdle as they were beaten 2-1 at Biggleswade United.
Luke Cummins had given Ar Tarn a first-half lead but the hosts fought back after the break and sealed victory thanks to goals from Adam Drakulic and Nyasha Sagwete.
And it was even worse for Wellingborough Town as they were hammered 8-1 by Ashford Town (Middx) at the Dog & Duck. Jake Newman netted the Doughboys’ consolation.
Irchester United bounced back from their opening-day trouncing at Peterborough Sports with an impressive 3-2 victory at Bugbrooke in the UCL Division One league action.
Dan Field put Bugbrooke in front before Jared Harewood equalised and Irchester took the lead through Martin Brown five minutes into the second half.
Sam Dengel gave the Romans some breathing space and that goal proved decisive as the hosts pulled one back through Brad Janes.
Stewarts & Lloyds made it two wins out of two as they saw off Woodford United 3-1 at Occupation Road.
Goals from Liam Boath and Callum Noble put the Foundrymen in control at the break and, although Joe Henderson gave the visitors hope, David Sheridan wrapped things up on 85 minutes.
Rushden & Higham United picked up their first win of the season with a 2-1 success over Lutterworth Athletic at Hayden Road.
Jordan Pendred put the Lankies in front in the first half but Dom Ivens looked to have earned the visitors a point 11 minutes from full-time.
However, Lewis O’Dell struck back to earn his side all three points.
