Irchester United started the new ChromaSport & Trophies United Counties League Division One season in devastating fashion as they hit a magnificent seven at Bourne Town.
Steve Sargent’s first game in charge of the Romans ended with a brilliant 7-3 success.
Three goals in nine first-half minutes put the visitors in charge as Jack Dyson, Ryan Lovell and Moises Rodrigues got on the scoresheet before Jezz Goldson-Williams pulled one back.
Dyson added his second during first-half stoppage-time but there was still time for Goldson-Williams to make it 4-2 at the break.
Dyson completed his hat-trick as the goals kept coming and Goldson-Williams followed suit for the hosts.
But the Romans pulled away again and an own-goal from Sam Wilson made it 6-3 before Mitch Blande rounded off an incredible afternoon in the last minute.
It was a fine day for a number of other local clubs in the division as well as Thrapston Town fought back from 2-1 down to win 3-2 at Bugbrooke.
Jack Wisniewski had given Thrapston an early lead but goals either side of the break from Chris Griffin and Steve Botterill put the hosts 2-1 up.
However, a Ray Hackett own-goal got Richard Scott’s team level again and Ben Morgan won it in the 84th minute.
Rushden & Higham United won by the same scoreline but they also had to come from behind at St Neots Town, who took the lead through Sean Barker.
Tyler Merries levelled for the Lankies and then put them in front just past the quarter-hour.
Summer signing Jed Ainge made the game safe in the second half, although Tyler Price did grab a late consolation for the hosts.
There was also away-day joy for Raunds Town as they fought back from a goal down to win 2-1 at Woodford United.
The home side went in front through Martin Thompson but Karl King equalised and Dave Townsend grabbed what proved to be the winner five minutes before half-time.
The first local derby of the season went the way of Whitworth as they ran out comfortable 3-0 winners at Stewarts & Lloyds, who were relegated from the top flight in the last campaign.
Deven Ellwood gave the Flourmen a 1-0 lead at the break and Remy Brittain completed the victory with a second-half brace.
Burton Park Wanderers picked up a good point on the road as they held Olney Town to a 0-0 draw.
But there was disappointment for Rothwell Corinthians as they went down 2-1 to ON Chenecks at Sergeants Lawn.
Elliott Muddiman gave the visitors the lead inside five minutes but Shaun Sparrow’s team were level before half-time thanks to debutant Cameron Starsmore.
However, Chenecks returned to Northampton with all three points as Jez Hindle’s second-half goal proved decisive.
Desborough Town pushed much-fancied Holbeach United all the way in their first game of the season in the Premier Division before a late goal saw them go down 2-1.
The hosts took the lead through Lee Beeson but Ar Tarn looked like they had claimed a point when debutant Dave Goodman equalised on 67 minutes.
However, Ash Fuller won it for the Tigers as he struck with just three minutes left on the clock.
Wellingborough Town, meanwhile, tasted defeat on the opening weekend as they lost 2-0 at newly-promoted Harrowby United.
Both goals came in the first half as Liam Harper opened the scoring before Scott Webb secured the points.
