Whitworth have snapped up ex-England defender Neil ‘Razor’ Ruddock!

Boss James Daldy confirmed the 46-year-old former Premier League star has joined the ChromaSport & Trophies United Counties League Division One side.

Daldy explained that Ruddock is friends with reserve-team boss Ben Thomas and he’s “persuaded” the ex-Liverpool, Southampton and West Ham centre-half to sign on for the Flourmen.

Daldy said: “Neil has signed for the club with a view to playing for us, but with his work commitments we just don’t know how often he will be available.

“He does a lot of work at weekends, but obviously, if he can come to training and he’s available to play, we will be interested in seeing what he can do for us.

“Neil does come to the ground quite often. Ben organises sportsman’s dinners and is good friends with him through that.

“Ben has persuaded him to sign on for us and have a run out, but when that will be just depends on his other commitments.”

Whitworth head to Bourne Town tomorrow (Saturday) with Daldy admitting “it’s going to be very difficult” for his side to snatch a top-two place in Division One.

They remain in contention after a fine 6-2 success at St Neots Saints on Tuesday.

But looking ahead, Daldy positive about next season.

He said: “Every season we’re looking to improve and if we keep the players we have here and they show the same hunger to win football matches, we can do well next season.

“We’ve got a lot of lads who are just coming out of their teens who will benefit from the experience of this season.

“They know what it takes to win football matches at this level now.

“We’ve learned that this is a tough, competitive division.

“We’ve done well against the top teams, but we’ve dropped points in games we might have been expected to win.”

Elsewhere in Division One this weekend, Rothwell Corinthians entertain Irchester United in a local derby while Burton Park Wanderers make the trip to fellow strugglers St Neots Saints.

Rock-bottom Stewarts & Lloyds face Woodford United at Occupation Road while Thrapston Town host Buckingham Town.
