Kettering Town suffered their first defeat in pre-season as they went down 1-0 at ChromaSport & Trophies United Counties League Premier Division side Peterborough Northern Star.
A strong Poppies line-up went behind on 26 minutes thanks to Nick Davey’s fine free-kick but that came after both Jonathon Thorpe and Louis Hamilton had struck the crossbar with respective efforts.
Kettering did have further chances in the second period with Dave Deeney, Jake Newman, Will Muzvimbiri and Paul Caswell all sending shots wide of the mark while Phil Green’s free-kick was saved by the home goalkeeper.
The Poppies were also hit by the news that prospective signing Henry Eze, who was the club’s player-of-the-year last season, featured in a friendly for Stourbridge.
Kettering are back in action on Tuesday night when they travel to Harborough Town while Corby Town get their pre-season under way the following night when Cambridge United come to Steel Park.
Northampton Town claimed a comfortable 5-1 victory over Sileby Rangers at Fernie Fields as Aidy Boothroyd ran the rule over a number of trialists.
One of them, former Newcastle United striker JJ Hooper, rattled in a hat-trick while another, Lateef Elford-Alliyu also got on the scoresheet. Ian Morris headed in the fifth for the Cobblers team, which also included veteran centre-back Darren Purse.
UCL Premier Division side AFC Rushden & Diamonds, meanwhile, suffered a 3-0 defeat at 1874 Northwich FC, who claimed the Supporters Direct Cup as a result.
