New goals are set for Goosey's Doughboys

Having battled against the drop in the last campaign, the Doughboys have been more comfortable in the ChromaSport & Trophies United Counties League Premier Division this time round.

Goosey started the season as assistant-manager alongside Jon Mitchell but then took on the main role following the former boss’ departure.

One of their targets was to beat their points total of 40 for last season and they did just that when the 4-0 win at struggling Harrowby United moved them onto 42 with nine games still to go.

The next is a clash with Holbeach United at the Dog & Duck on Saturday and Goosey believes his team will go into it full of confidence.

“I must admit I was a very happy man on Saturday evening and the beer certainly tasted a bit sweeter,” the Wellingborough boss said.

“We didn’t play particularly well and they have are having a tough time over at Harrowby at the moment.

“But to score four goals, keep a clean sheet and pick up three points was great.

“We have gone past 40 points which was the total we got last season so we have hit one of the targets we set

“But now I have set some new goals for us and we have will now focus on achieving those before the end of the season.

“We can look forward to this weekend now. Confidence is high and we are on our own pitch so hopefully we can pick up another positive result.”

Shaun Sparrow is hoping Rothwell Corinthians can find a way to finish the season unbeaten against the champions-elect when they take on UCL Premier Division leaders Peterborough Sports at Sergeants Lawn tomorrow.

Corinthians ended Sports’ long winning run at home when they claimed a fine 0-0 draw in the reverse fixture in December.

And joint-boss Sparrow is now keen to see his players to give the table-toppers more to think about this weekend.

“There is nothing to lose, we aren’t desperate for points because we aren’t in this battle or that battle,” Sparrow said.

“We have got the champions-elect coming to town, they are going to win the league and everyone knows that.

“But how good would it be from our point of view to be able to say that the champions weren’t able to beat us during the season?

“There is no expectation on us but we want to go out there and see what the difference between the two sides is.

“It’s almost a free game to a certain extent.

“Hopefully our players will go out there and show that they are capable of causing a very good team a few problems.”

Desborough Town and Wisbech Town will try again at the Waterworks Field this weekend.

Their UCL Knockout Cup semi-final clash was wiped out due to a waterlogged pitch last Saturday.

The league have now rescheduled the Premier Division fixtures both clubs were due to have tomorrow to enable the last-four encounter to go ahead.

The clash sees fourth-placed Ar Tarn up against an in-form Fenmen side and Desborough boss Chris Bradshaw reports that he will have the same squad to choose from.

Indeed, as far as their approach goes, not a great deal has changed in the space of a week.

“There’s not a lot different from our point of view,” Bradshaw said.

“We have the same group of players available and we are expecting them to go out and give it their best.

“These lads have worked hard this season and deserve a chance in a cup final but they 
will have to go out there and earn it against a very good team.”

The winners of the semi-final will take on fellow Premier Division outfit Yaxley in the final.
