Rushden & Higham United will try to derail local rivals Whitworth’s push at the top of ChromaSport & Trophies United Counties League Division One on tomorrow (Saturday).
The Flourmen have been flying of late and are in contention for the two automatic promotion slots while they also booked their place in the last eight of the NFA Junior Cup with an impressive 5-2 victory over fellow high-flyers Daventry Town last weekend.
The Lankies also made progress into the quarter-finals with a 4-0 success over Silverstone.
And now joint-boss Wayne Abbott is hoping his team can throw a spanner in the Whitworth works at Hayden Road.
“It’s a big one for us,” he said.
“There were a few players who jumped ship and left us to join Whitworth so we know each other well and there is plenty of rivalry there.
“They are in a much better position than us at the moment so we are the underdogs with nothing to lose.
“But we have won big games against Daventry and Bugbrooke this season so hopefully we can perform like we did in those.”
It was no secret that this season was expected to be a tough one for the Lankies after a difficult summer.
But Abbott insists he and his players are looking forward to seeing it through.
“We still struggle with commitment from some of the players but it is getting better from that point of view,” he added.
“We are focusing on some important league games and the cup matches and we will do our best to see what we knew would be a hard season through.”
It’s been a fine few days for Steve Sargent’s Irchester United as two wins have shot them up to into the top six.
Ty Clark scored four and Ryan Lovell two as they thumped Oakham United 6-1 at Alfred Street last weekend and they followed that up with a 3-0 success at Burton Park Wanderers on Tuesday night with Lovell, Laurence Taylor and Nathan Heycock on target.
The Romans host Bourne Town this weekend while Wanderers make the trip to fifth-placed Buckingham Town.
Elsewhere tomorrow, Raunds Town take on Long Buckby at Kiln Park while Thrapston Town are in UCL Knockout Cup action as they entertain Premier Division side Wisbech Town.
