AFC Rushden & Diamonds will have to wait until at least Tuesday night to claim the ChromaSport & Trophies United Counties League Premier Division title.
Andy Peaks’ side thrashed ground neighbours Wellingborough Town 7-0 at the Dog & Duck as the Doughboys’ campaign ended on a low note.
But Diamonds will now head to Sileby Rangers in midweek knowing that if they avoid defeat they will be promoted as champions.
Diamonds dominated the opening period and had the game won before half-time.
They took the lead on 14 minutes when Jack Ashton headed home Declan Rogers’ corner and it 2-0 soon after when Scott Joseph coolly lobbed home after taking the ball down well.
Tom Lorraine made it 3-0 when he fired home after Liam Dolman’s shot had hit the post.
And the hosts got a fourth before the break when Joseph beat two players before slotting home.
There was no let-up after the break either as Joseph won a penalty when he was fouled and Matt Gearing stepped up to make it 5-0.
Dolman headed home the sixth from a corner and then repeated the trick 10 minutes from full-time to complete the scoring.
So, no title to celebrate just yet but just one more point will do it. All eyes on Sileby on Tuesday then...
