AFC Rushden & Diamonds took the bragging rights in their first-ever league meeting with landlords Wellingborough Town at the Dog & Duck.

The Boxing Day clash was watched by the biggest crowd of the ChromaSport & Trophies United Counties League Premier Division season so far with over 800 fans packing in to see Diamonds return to winning ways following their defeat at Boston Town.

Mark Starmer’s men took the lead when Alfie Taylor converted from the penalty spot after a foul on Russ Dunkley.

But the Doughboys levelled on 32 minutes when Brad Piercewright headed home a free-kick.

Diamonds regained the lead before the break when Arron Parkinson volleyed home and they had a two-goal advantage on 57 minutes when Dunkley converted Taylor’s pass.

And it was Taylor who had the final say when he smashed home a loose ball to send his side into third place in the table.

Stewarts & Lloyds’ trip to Huntingdon Town was called off but news of Kevin Byrne’s resignation as manager soon followed.

Byrne took the reigns at Occupation Road in August but the Foundrymen had been on a poor run of form that has seen them drawn into a relegation dogfight.

Desborough Town’s derby clash at Harborough Town also fell foul of the weather.

The formbook was torn up in the Division One derby clash at London Road as Rushden & Higham United picked up their first win in seven matches while ending Whitworth’s unbeaten run.

Lewis O’Dell was the hero for the Lankies as he grabbed the only goal of the game in the second half.

Honours ended even at Chancery Lane as Thrapston Town and Burton Park Wanderers drew 2-2.

Wanderers held a 2-1 lead at the break as Luke Raftery and Wayne Brown struck either side of Stef Gatting’s goal for the hosts.

And Thrapston picked up their first point under Richard Scott when Ryan Watkin scored with three minutes remaining.

Irchester United took the lead against second-from-bottom Bugbrooke but the hosts fought back to pick up their first win since September.

Jordan Pendered put the Romans in front but Olly Garafalo levelled before the break before scoring the winner from fully 30 yards with five minutes left.

The local derby between Rothwell Corinthians and Raunds Town was postponed.
