AFC Rushden & Diamonds took a giant step towards the ChromaSport & Trophies United Counties League Premier Division title as they battled back from a goal down to beat AFC Kempston Rovers 2-1.
The victory means Andy Peaks’ side now hold a seven-point advantage over second-placed Wisbech Town.
Diamonds fell behind late in the first half when Shane Bush opened the scoring but Kempston had Seb Simpson sent off in the second period.
And Diamonds took full advantage with Tommy Berwick setting up Brad Harris for the equaliser before the same player grabbed his third goal in two games from Matt Gearing’s free-kick to win it with 13 minutes to go.
Elsewhere in the Premier Division, Wellingborough Town were beaten 2-1 at home by Oadby Town, who went in front through Mason Hirst.
Dan Spaughton levelled before the break but the visitors claimed the points thanks to Matt Brown’s late goal.
It was a big night for Rothwell Corinthians as they moved into the promotion places in Division One with a superb 3-0 victory over high-flying rivals Peterborough Sports.
Andy White gave the hosts a half-time lead and the in-form Jordan Henson struck twice in the second period to secure a priceless win.
There was also a fantastic success for Whitworth as they ended leaders Northampton Spencer’s 22-match unbeaten run with a 1-0 verdict.
Cavell Jarvis’ goal on 36 minutes proved decisive for the Flourmen.
Irchester United made it back-to-back wins with 3-1 success at local rivals Burton Park Wanderers.
Two goals in six second-half minutes from Joe Ebsworth put the Romans in control before Sam Dengel secured the victory in the last 10 minutes. Mick Tolton grabbed a late consolation for the hosts.
