Tommy Wright felt the performances of some of the younger players at Corby Town was the big plus point for him as their pre-season friendly programme swung into action this week.

The Steelmen beat United Counties League Premier Division side Eynesbury Rovers 2-1 at Montsaye Academy on Tuesday night thanks to goals from Brad Lee Gascoigne and youngster Michael Ogilvie.

Corby continue their preparations for the new Evo-Stik Northern Premier League Premier Division campaign with a trip to Rothwell Corinthians on Saturday.

And while Wright was able to give the vast majority of his new-look squad a run-out in midweek, he conceded it was the stars of tomorrow who caught the eye.

“The boys will be working hard in the gym today (Thursday) and then in training tonight and we will be ready to go again at the weekend,” the Steelmen boss said.

“We will have Callum Ball back in the squad and I am sure that will bring a lot to us.

“It’s just about continuing the preparations and it was a good start on Tuesday.

“I think it’s fair to say they looked a bit rusty at times but you have to expect that.

“But what was really pleasing was the performances of some of the younger lads.

“It was great to see Michael get his goal, Ryan Bell was outstanding for us in the second half and we were able to get 16-year-old Harry Freestone in the game as well.

“The likes of Michael, Luke Aridegbe and Sekou Kromah all had a taste of the first team last season and they will be part of it again this season.

“It looks like they have all improved and with the daytime training, they will be in and around the first team a lot.”

The Steelmen, meanwhile, have confirmed Places Gym in the town as their gym partner for the new season.

Situated just off Westcott Way next to Willow Place Shopping Centre, the fully equipped gym will provide the Steelmen squad with everything they need to reach their fitness goals.

A spokesperson for Places Gym said: “We are very proud to be supporting and working closely with Corby Town Football Club.

“We hope that it is the start of a long and fruitful relationship.

“We love that each week we will get a chance to work with some very gifted footballers and hopefully help to get them in shape for what promises to be an amazing season.”
