Tommy Wright has added six new players to his Corby Town squad as they prepare for their first pre-season friendly tomorrow (Saturday).
Former Bray Wanderers striker Bidemi Afolabi and ex-Port Vale winger Wilson Carvalho, who had a spell on loan with the Steelmen last season, have both signed one-year contracts at Steel Park.
Former Stevenage and Sutton United midfielder Akin Abiola Daramola and left-back Lewis Jackson, who lists Alfreton Town, Mansfield Town and Matlock Town amongst his former clubs, have also joined following successful trials with the club.
And Wright has also moved to add two young prospects to the first-team squad with defenders Curtis Hartley and Eric Yeboah, who are both 17, set to attend Tresham Academy as part of the partnership with the Steelmen.
Afolabi scored 12 goals in 15 appearances for Bray Wanderers’ under-19 side and made six appearances in the Irish top flight last season, finding the net on four occasions.
Wright said: “Bidemi is a young striker with a lot of talent. He scored a bag full of goals at youth level in Ireland and followed that up with three more in his trial match here.
“He is tall and will cause opposition defences plenty of problems. He has so much potential and I am really looking forward to working with him in order to help him to develop further.”
Carvalho also had a loan stint at last season’s Southern League Premier Division champions Hemel Hempstead and was part of the Nike Academy at one stage.
Wright added: “Wilson is a player that I know a lot about already.
“He is a very quick and skilful winger, who comes from a good footballing background. The fact that he was at the Nike Academy shows exactly what he is about and I think the supporters will really enjoy watching him.
“His manager at Port Vale, Micky Adams, was also my boss at Leicester and he was very complimentary about Wilson when I have spoken to him.”
As far as youngsters Hartley and Yeboah are concerned, Wright expects both of them to gain first-team experience during the new campaign, which kicks off against Hitchin Town at Steel Park on August 9.
The Corby manager said: “They have been impressive so far in pre-season and are certainly ones to look out for in the future.
“I expect them both to continue their development at Tresham and they will get opportunities this season with the first team too.”
Corby begin their friendly campaign tomorrow when they take on town rivals Stewarts & Lloyds in the Bob Cummings Cup match on the Rockingham Triangle pitch.
