Corby Town’s new Calor League Premier Division campaign started badly at Steel Park at newly-promoted Burnham claimed a comfortable 2-0 success.
The Steelmen sprang a surprise ahead of the game as they announced the signings of Elliot Sandy and Jack Ashton ahead of kick-off.
Sandy was handed his debut while Ashton wasn’t included in the squad and the new boy almost had a dream start in a Corby shirt.
The striker, most recently with Brackley Town, got clear and went round visiting goalkeeper Michael Watkins but saw his shot cleared by Reece Yorke.
But Burnham responded well to that and Paul Walker did well to push away Yorke’s curling shot following a corner.
And it was the visitors who broke the deadlock on 19 minutes. A ball was slipped through for Ryan Blake who had plenty of time to beat Walker at the near post.
Walker got down to save Ryan Upward’s strike from distance but it was 2-0 on 28 minutes when a disastrous mix-up allowed Burnham to extend their lead.
Sam Ives was attempting to head back to Walker, who was already coming to collect the ball. He missed it and it left Dia John with the simple task of blasting into an empty net.
Moreman headed over soon after and then dragged a shot wide late in the half when he should have done a lot better.
The half-time whistle was greeted with boos from the home fans and their team should have been 3-0 down soon after the restart when John blasted over the bar despite having the goal at his mercy.
Mark Arber forced Watkins into a save at the other end but Walker was soon back in action and he brilliantly tipped Lewis Driver’s header over the crossbar.
From there it was fairly scrappy. Burnham were happy to sit on their lead and Corby were unable to unlock a strong defence.
And it was the visitors who wrapped the game up two minutes from the end when substitute Daniel Bailey shot into the corner with his first touch.
