Corby Town’s promotion hopes took a hit in the south-west as they were beaten 2-1 at Dorchester Town.

As expected, Tommy Wright handed a first league start to youngster Elliott Bentley with Kalern Thomas ruled out with a knee injury.

Greg Mills wasn’t named in the squad while Edi Appleton was given the nod at centre-half with skipper Paul Malone on the bench.

The Steelmen fell behind early on as Andreas Robinson fired the hosts in front with a fine strike.

And Dorchester had the ball in the net again before the break but it was ruled out for offside.

Bentley was replaced by Malone before half-time but things got worse for Corby in the second half when Dan Smith doubled the hosts’ lead just past the hour.

Shane Byrne shot over the bar as the Steelmen tried to find a way back while Smith did likewise at the other end.

Corby gave themselves hope with five minutes to go when Spencer Weir-Daley pulled a goal back. But they were unable to find an equaliser

Steelmen: Walker; Kennedy, Bentley, Anton, Appleton, Byrne, Milnes, Taylor, Chamberlain, Weir-Daley, Carvalho. Subs: Hartley, Clarke, Malone, May, Wright.

Attendance: 290.
