Corby Town’s first pre-season friendly of the summer ended in a 4-0 defeat to Conference Premier side Cambridge United at Steel Park.

The Steelmen, who are preparing for a Calor League Premier Division campaign, included all their summer signings in the starting line-up with Mark Arber partnering Paul Malone at the heart of the defence while Chris Carruthers, Tom James, Jamie Thurlbourne and Tom Berwick also featured.

The first half was goalless but the visitors took control after the break with Delano Sam-Yorke scoring twice before Ryan Donaldson made it 3-0. And it was Liam Hughes – who enjoyed a successful loan spell with Corby last season – who rounded the scoring off.

Chris Plummer’s men head to Daventry Town for their next pre-season action on Saturday.

Elsewhere, UCL Premier Division new boys AFC Rushden & Diamonds were edged out 3-2 at Stamford.

Fomer Rushden & Diamonds players Andy Burgess and Jon Challinor were included in the Daniels’ squad with Burgess starting the clash at Kettering Road.

Jordan Smith fired Stamford into a half-time lead but Diamonds fought back in the second half with summer signing Fazel Koriya levelling before the frontman gave his team the lead after good work from Russ Dunkley.

But two goals in the final eight minutes from Alvin Jarvis and Tom Liversedge sealed Stamford’s success.

Diamonds are back in action on Saturday when they take on Jon Brady’s Brackley Town at the Dog & Duck.
