AFC Rushden & Diamonds boss Andy Peaks wants his team’s full focus on tomorrow’s trip to Petersfield Town.

Diamonds moved up to second in the Evo-Stik Southern League Division One Central after they inflicted a 7-1 hammering on Leighton Town at the Dog & Duck on Tuesday night.

This weekend sees the reverse fixture from the opening day of the season when Diamonds and Petersfield shared the points in a 1-1 draw as both sides made their first appearances at a higher level.

Peaks’ side have gone from strength-to-strength since then and are just a point behind leaders St Ives Town with two games in hand.

St Ives are the visitors to the Dog & Duck next Tuesday night while a clash with another of the high-fliers, Royston Town, follows on from that.

But Peaks only has Petersfield on his mind at the moment as Diamonds aim to continue their fine run of form in the league.

“I am expecting a really tough game,” he said.

“Plenty of people are wanting to talk about the matches with St Ives and Royston next week but we have to focus on Petersfield first.

“It’s a long trip that we have to deal with and we are playing a team who are very much up and down.

“We were quite fortunate to get a point from them on the first day of the season and I am expecting it to be just as hard on Saturday.”

Edi Appleton is in line to make his first full appearance for Diamonds with influential centre-back Liam Dolman beginning a three-match ban this weekend.

And Peaks was pleased to be able to give Appleton some time on the pitch on Tuesday ahead of what should be his first start on Saturday.

“The plan was to try to get Edi into the game on Tuesday night and with the way it went, it meant we were able to give him some good time on the pitch,” he added.

“You could see from his performance that he is a good organiser and he looked comfortable so I am sure he will do the job for us.”

Peaks will also be checking up on the fitness of Andy Hall and Richard Bunting after they were both withdrawn in the first half in midweek, although neither player has been ruled out yet.
