The Steelmen were hammered 5-1 at fellow strugglers Sutton Coldfield in their most damaging defeat of what is proving to be a disastrous campaign in the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League Premier Division.

The humbling loss, which saw Steven Leslie score their consolation, leaves Corby rock-bottom of the table and still nine points from safety as they head towards the halfway point of the league season.

Mills has picked up just one point from six league matches since taking over as manager at Steel Park towards the end of October.

And, following the weekend’s shocking setback, the boss insists he won’t shy away from the challenge.

“At the end of the day it’s my name next to it, I am responsible for the team that goes out there,” Mills said.

“But there comes a point when the players have to take responsibility for what happens on the pitch.

“There is a lack of belief that has come from not winning games. The club has won just nine matches in 16 months and they haven’t won away from home since January.

“These are things that have mainly happened before my time started here and, like I said when I first arrived, there is no quick fix.

“I know there is a lot of frustration but anyone who thought that I could come in, sign a few players and turn things around with five or six wins in a row was always going to be way off the mark.

“The problems run a bit deeper. It’s a tough, tough job but I knew that when I took it on.

“As a management team, we have to lead from the front and then the lads have got to follow suit. They get paid to perform for the club and, at the moment, they are letting the club down.

“David and I have been in the game a long time and we know what it takes to get out of it.

“It takes hard work, desire and guts and the players have to start showing it.

“The club is going through a transitional period. It’s the mentality and a mindset that needs to be changed and you can’t just click your fingers and expect that to happen.”
