Goal hero Spencer Weir-Daley has described Corby Town’s stunning Evo-Stik Southern League Premier Division title success as “unbelievable”.

The experienced striker scored his 22nd and 23rd goals of the season to help send the Steelmen to promotion as they won 3-2 at Poole Town in the final-day showdown at the weekend.

Needing a win to claim the crown, Weir-Daley put Corby in front just 45 seconds into the second half before Greg Mills’ penalty soon after had them seemingly on their way.

But Poole, who themselves needed just a draw to win the title, battled back to level at 2-2 before Weir-Daley wrote his name into to Steelmen’s history books by grabbing the goal that secured promotion with just nine minutes of the season remaining.

Throughout the campaign Tommy Wright’s team seemed to defy the odds with controversial floodlight failures and various other setbacks not being enough to deny them their moment of glory.

And for Weir-Daley, who joined the club from Boston United last summer, the campaign now represents one of his best experiences in the game.

“My heart was going 10 to the dozen at the end,” the frontman said.

“It wasn’t looking too promising at half-time but we blew them away for the first 10 minutes in the second half.

“I thought we had thrown it away when they came back to 2-2 but then that moment came and I thought Tommy was going to score but it fell to me.

“You couldn’t have written this story, I don’t think it will ever happen again.

“With everything that happened with Hereford dropping out of the league and then the controversy with the games at Truro, it’s unbelievable and it’s one of the best experiences I have had.”

Weir-Daley, meanwhile, piled the praise on his team-mates as he insists every member of the squad played a key role in helping the Steelmen to title glory.

“Every single person has played their part from the most experienced in Cleveland Taylor to the youngest in Sam Donkin,” he added.

“There are no big-timers in the squad. All of us are humble and we have all put the work in. That’s the way it should be.”
