Bell hopes a change in approach can help lift the Steelmen

There was a change in approach for Corby Town this week as they head into possibly the most crucial period of their season so far.

The Steelmen’s 1-0 defeat at Workington last weekend, coupled by Skelmersdale’s win over Ilkeston, resulted in Gary Mills’ team dropping back to the foot of the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League Premier Division.

Boss Mills is still awaiting his first league point since taking charge and, with Corby seven adrift of safety, the need for points on the board is becoming more desperate by the week.

If things are to turn then it may well be their form at Steel Park that holds the key.

Mills’ second home league game since taking over the reins arrives when they entertain Ashton United tomorrow (Saturday).

That’s followed by two more with Barwell the visitors next weekend (November 26) before they host Rushall Olympic on the following Wednesday (November 30).

And assistant-manager David Bell, who has been playing a part on the pitch in recent matches, revealed he and Mills changed things up in training in the build up to this weekend’s clash in a bid to lift the spirits.

“We wanted to try something a bit different because sometimes things can get a bit repetitive,” former Coventry City and Norwich City man Bell said.

“So the lads came in on Tuesday, we had a gathering in the bar at the club, we did a quiz and we watched a bit of the England game as well.

“It was all aimed at building a bit of togetherness.

“We have had a few new faces in and when you are training and then going home, it can be a bit difficult to get to know everyone.

“We have added a bit of experience in the form of Stefan Moore, Phil Trainer, Jamie Tank and James Jepson but it is still a very young squad in general.

“So we took football off their minds and focused on the spirit and the lads were in good form for it.

“We were back in tonight (Thursday) for a really good session.

“We have got a run of home league games coming up and they are going to be really big for us.”

It was confirmed this week that striker Moore has now joined the Steelmen on a permanent basis having previously on loan from Vanarama National League club Solihull Moors.
