Kettering Town produced a dominant second-half display to claim a fine 3-0 success at Premier Division outfit Arlesey Town in the second round of the Calor League’s Red Insure Cup.
After a goalless first half, the Division One Central Poppies took control in the second period with two goals from Jonathon Thorpe and one from substitute Kieren Joseph completing an excellent night for manager Dean Thomas and his players.
Kettering confirmed the signing of goalkeeper Denham Hinds ahead of the clash and he was handed his first start as Thomas opted for a 4-5-1 formation with Rob Foster leading the line.
But the striker’s evening was a short one as he was forced off with what appeared to be a shoulder injury after 20 minutes and replaced by Joseph.
The Poppies almost went in front when home goalkeeper Jack Bonham saved Henry Eze’s header while Denham’s first action saw him make a brave stop from Andrew Osei-Siribour.
Thorpe shot wide after being played in by Ash Fuller while Stuart Farrell did likewise at the other end after beating Eze in the challenge.
But the Poppies did take the lead a minute after the restart when Thorpe slotted home with his left foot.
Fuller chipped an effort over the crossbar but the lead was doubled when Joseph played in Thorpe and he calmly drew the goalkeeper in before slotting the ball in.
And a fine night for the Poppies was rounded off when Bonham made a mess when trying to gather a ball into the box and Joseph was left with a simple tap-in.
It means Thomas’ men can look forward to the next round of the cup and they resume their Division One Central campaign against Beaconsfield SYCOB at Latimer Park on Saturday.
Poppies line-up: Arlesey: Hinds, Akubuine, Kinniburgh, Jepson, Eze, Hull, Thorpe, Gooding, Foster, Logan, Fuller. Subs: Hamilton, Joseph, Newman, Ebanks, Bukasa.
