Corby Town were undone by two late goals as they signed off their pre-season schedule with a 3-1 defeat to a Leicester City XI at Steel Park.
The Steelmen were well in the game and Spencer Weir-Daley forced John Maddison into a good, early save while Greg Mills curled another effort wide before the Foxes took the lead just before half-time when Callum Elder headed home at the far post.
Edi Appleton scooped an effort over the bar early in the second period before Corby levelled thanks to Duane Courtney’s emphatic half-volley.
But, after Tommy Wright had made a number of changes, Leicester won it late on with Harry Panayiotou heading home before Michael Cain rounded things off with a good strike.
The Steelmen now have a full week to prepare for their opening Vanarama National League North fixture at Curzon Ashton next Saturday.
AFC Rushden & Diamonds also completed their friendly programme and warmed up for their Evo-Stik Southern League Division One Central opener with Petersfield Town with a 3-1 victory over Loughborough Dynamo at the Dog & Duck.
Diamonds fell behind but levelled just before half-time through Tom Berwick.
Tom Lorraine’s fine scoring form in pre-season continued just after the break and Scott Joseph, who signed on for Diamonds earlier in the week, completed the victory with a fine chip.
Kettering Town’s penultimate friendly of the summer ended in defeat as they were beaten 1-0 at Bedford Town.
The Poppies conceded during the opening period and were unable to find an equaliser despite putting the pressure on in the second half.
Marcus Law’s men round off pre-season with a trip to his former club Barwell on Tuesday.
