Kettering Town picked up a second home win in the space of a week to maintain their place at the top of the Evo-Stik Southern League Division One Central as they beat Godalming Town 2-1 at Latimer Park.

Elliot Sandy continued his terrific form since returning to the club as he grabbed his fourth goal in as many appearances while Brett Solkhon rounded off another three points with a second-half header.

Joint-managers Scott Machin and Thomas Baillie made one change following the 3-2 success over Barton Rovers in midweek with Ash Robinson coming back into the side in place of Andy Gooding.

There was no place on the bench for striker Alfie Taylor who revealed on Twitter earlier in the week that he had been told he was free to find another club with no guarantees over first-team football at Latimer Park.

Godalming were the first to threaten with Jamie McAlindon saving Jack Mazzone’s long-range effort before the Kettering goalkeeper pulled off a fine double stop to deny Mazzone and George Frith before Adam Cornell fired the rebound over the bar.

Kettering’s first chance arrived when Claudiu Hoban weaved his way through the visiting defence but saw his shot saved by Richard Ossai.

Godalming missed a golden opportunity to break the deadlock when Frith got through and went round McAlindon but Jason Lee got back to clear his shot into an empty net off the line.

And the Poppies took full advantage of that let off as they took the lead four minutes before the break when Sandy turned brilliantly before firing his effort into the corner.

Godalming went close to levelling just before the hour when Chris Musgrove’s header crashed off the bar before being cleared.

Kettering responded with Andy Hall latching on to Dubi Ogbonna’s flick and forcing Ossai into a good save.

But the Poppies did open up a 2-0 lead on 67 minutes when Solkhon headed Hoban’s corner home from close-range.

Ossai had to be at his best to pull off a fine double save from Sandy and Hoban as Kettering went for a third.

Godalming did pull a goal back with three minutes to go when Will Hutton beat McAlindon with a shot into the corner.

But Kettering saw the game out and wrapped up another crucial victory.
