Former Corby Town captain Paul Malone looks set to sign for Kettering Town within the next 24 hours.
Sources close to the player confirmed to the Northants Telegraph he is likely to join the Poppies and the website www.srsn.co.uk have also suggested that is the case after it was revealed his contract with Evo-Stik Northern Premier League Division One South side Stamford had been terminated by mutual consent.
If the deal is completed, Malone will link up with former Steelmen team-mates Spencer Weir-Daley and Wilson Carvalho, with whom he helped Corby win the Evo-Stik Southern League Premier Division title.
Malone suffered a double leg break towards the end of that campaign and played for Stamford towards the end of last season before signing a new deal in the summer.
Stamford manager Graham Drury said: “After breaking his leg a year ago Paul wants to try and play as much football as possible.
“It has frustrated him being on the bench. Paul has been a top professional for Stamford and is a superb guy.
“I get on really well with him and wish him the very best for his future.”
Poppies boss Marcus Law has confirmed the club are on the verge of signing a new central defender and it is understood the deal could be done in time for Malone to make his debut against AFC Rushden & Diamonds in tomorrow’s (Tuesday) NFA Hillier Cup first-round clash at Latimer Park.
