Adam Boyes’ late goal denied Kettering Town a winning finish to the season at Nene Park as Barrow claimed a 1-1 draw, a result that saw the Poppies slip to the foot of the Blue Square Bet Premier table.

The Poppies made just one change with Patrick Noubissie coming in for the departed Jerel Ifil and that meant David Bridges played alongside caretaker-manager Ashley Westwood at the heart of the defence.

Barrow made the brighter start and Richie Baker shot wide early on before Paul Rutherford went even closer after he cut in from the left.

The visitors were unlucky not to go in front on 12 minutes when Andy Cook’s fierce shot from a corner was blocked by team-mate Phil Bolland and Laurie Walker made a smart save from Adam Boyes’ follow-up.

The game turned into a scrappy affair after that with few chances for either side but it was the Poppies, with their first real opportunity, who took the lead on the stroke of half-time.

James Gray did well to send a low cross into the area after a corner had been half-cleared and Bridges produced a cool left-footed finish from six yards.

Barrow almost responded in stoppage-time when Bolland flicked Gavin Skelton’s free-kick just off target and they should have levelled 12 minutes into the second half when James Owen blasted wide after being sent clear on goal.

Owen almost put through his own net when he got his head to Kettering corner but Barrow gradually came more into it and Walker saved well from Boyes before the Bluebird’s leading scoring levelled with nine minutes to go.

Baker floated over a free-kick and Boyes applied the finish from close range.

Kettering almost regained the lead when Danny Mills flicked on Gray’s corner and Bridges could only bundle wide at the far post while Walker produced another good stop from Cook’s close-range effort.

But there was no further goal action as the game petered out.
