Kettering Town’s new-look squad slipped to a second successive defeat as Leamington maintained their unbeaten record in the Evo-Stik Southern League Premier Division with a 2-1 win at the New Windmill Ground.

The Poppies returned to action after a month without a game at the weekend when they were beaten 1-0 by Redditch United at Corby Town’s Steel Park stadium.

That game came after a month of financial strain that also so the electricity cut off at Nene Park.

Manager Alan Doyle threw together a new squad for that game and he named an unchanged line-up for the clash with the high-fliers.

And the Poppies made a perfect start as they took the lead on 18 minutes through Nathan Hicks, who missed a penalty in the defeat to Redditch.

But Kettering’s joy was shortlived as Ricky Johnson levelled things up just seven minutes later.

The Poppies continued to create chances and battled away but they eventually lost out as Lee Chilton’s shot deflected in off Adam Mitter.

Kettering are back on the road again at the weekend when they head to Arlesey Town.

Poppies starting line-up: Nlate, Gyasi, Crowie, Mitter, Da Rosa, Khinda, Johnson, King, Hicks, Muzvimbiri, Akinshade.

Goals: Hicks (18 mins, 0-1), Johnson (25 mins, 1-1), Chilton (76 mins, 2-1).

Attendance: 418.
