Frontman Mills confirms his Steelmen exit

Greg Mills has confirmed he is leaving Corby Town after three years at Steel Park

The frontman, who scored 19 goals in all competitions despite the club’s relegation from the Vanarama National League North, will depart Steel Park in a bid to continue playing at a higher level.

Mills was one of the key men in the Steelmen’s incredible Evo-Stik Southern League Premier Division title success just over a year ago and he also scored in the 3-2 win at Poole Town on the final day to help clinch the crown.

But the 25-year-old has now called time on his spell at Corby but he insists his only reason for leaving is to try to play at a higher level.

“I am only 25 and I want to play as high as I can while I can,” Mills said.

“If we had stayed up it would be a completely different situation.

“This is simply about me trying to play as high as I can while I am young enough, it’s got absolutely nothing to do with the club.

“I have had offers to go to teams in this area but I don’t people thinking I am jumping ship to another local rival because I won’t be doing that out of respect for Corby.

“I was one of those who continued to play here when we weren’t getting paid, we then won the league and I stayed again for the last season.

“I have a great relationship (Corby boss) Tommy Wright, the fans and people at the club and I gave Tommy my word I would stay here and try to help keep us up.

“On a personal level, I thought I did okay during the season. I scored a few goals but I would have traded those if it had meant us staying in the division.

“Three years ago I was going around the clubs and Tommy gave me the chance to come to Corby and just told me to enjoy it.

“I wanted us to stay up because I believe Corby deserve to be at that level but it didn’t work out that way.”

Wright, meanwhile, paid tribute to Mills and insists he has “no complaints” about the frontman’s decision to leave.

“Millsy has been my talisman, I love the kid to bits and I class him as a friend,” the Steelmen manager said.

“We have had a really good chat, he has done a good service at the club.

“He could have left in January but he gave me his word he would stay to try to keep the club up. He scored 19 goals and he did his bit. I have no complaints about his decision.

“He has been a great servant and deserves the chance to go and play at higher level.”
