Doughboys secure their status with final-day success

Having beaten Sileby Rangers by the same scoreline on Thursday night, the Doughboys required just one point from their final game of the season to complete their escape from the drop.

In the end, Jon Mitchell’s team did it in style as Oadby Town were condemned to relegation along with bottom side Huntingdon Town.

Jake Newman gave Wellingborough an early lead, only for Bobby Lee to level soon after.

Newman struck again to give the hosts a half-time advantage but it wasn’t until five minutes from full-time that the outcome was confirmed when Dan Spaughton scored from the penalty spot.

Matt Clarke did pull another back for Harrowby late on but the Doughboys saw it out to ensure top-flight football again next season.

Manager Shaun Sparrow was on target during a cameo appearance as Rothwell Corinthians rounded off a fine first season in the Premier Division with a 3-1 victory at Huntingdon.

Aaron Watts gave Corinthians the lead before half-time with Dan Cooper doubling the advantage on 57 minutes.

Ben Colmer replied for the hosts but Sparrow, on as a substitute, fired home from 25 yards as he completed his team’s fine campaign in fitting style.

That win for Corinthians was enough to lift them above Desborough Town in the final league table after Ar Tarn rounded off their season with a 0-0 draw at Deeping Rangers.
