LEFT-BACK Joe Widdowson will become Aidy Boothroyd’s latest signing for Northampton Town with effect from August 1st.

The 23-year-old, six-foot tall defender joined Rochdale in June 2010 from Grimsby Town and was a regular in league one for Dale in 2011/12.

Widdowson began his career with West Ham and while at Upton Park, he spent time on loan at Rotherham United in 2007/08.

His contract will run for the 2012/13 and 2013/14 seasons.

“Like our other summer signings, Joe is another player who played a lot of games last season at a higher level than league two,” said manager Aidy Boothroyd.

“He has a good amount of experience for a player of his age and I am looking forward to working with him.

“We needed a left back in the squad, and we managed to beat a number of clubs to his signature so I am very pleased to welcome Joe to Sixfields.”
