Corby boss Wright wants to end on a high note at Steel Park

Corby Town take on Stalybridge Celtic tomorrow (Saturday) in what will be their final home game in the Vanarama National League North for at least a season.

The Steelmen’s inevitable relegation was finally confirmed, despite a fine fightback from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 at Stockport County last weekend as Ben Milnes and Greg Mills scored late goals to secure a point.

Despite the desperate disappointment on the pitch a year on from a glorious Southern League Premier Division title success, a sense of perspective has been held on the terraces.

Now Wright wants his players to give something back to the fans by producing a win to send them off into the summer, although there will still be one final piece of business to be done when Corby go to Harrogate Town for the final game of the season next weekend.

Once that is out of the way, the planning for next season, which will see the Steelmen’s first team training full-time in line with the academy, will truly begin.

And Wright is determined to make his team “stronger than ever”.

The Steelmen boss said: “We need to put in a performance for the fans and I want to win a game of football!

“It’s a long time since we have tasted that victory and there really is no better time to do it in the last home game of the season. And if we can, I think it will help give the supporters something to look forward to.

“In the next three or four weeks I think there will be a lot of positive news that will come out of the club to help get the fans back on side.

“It has been frustrating and that word has come up a lot during this season.

“I look at the league table now and I am always thinking about games where we could and should have got more than we did.

“I think the Hednesford game when we drew 0-0 was a big opportunity that we missed and even against Solihull Moors, we got beaten 4-1 and I genuinely still believe that we played well enough to merit something from the game.

“But we have to take heart from the fact that if we are able to come back into this league then we will be a lot more streetwise than we have been this season.

“I don’t think this would happen again if we can get back up.

“The reason I want us to go full-time is to make sure we are stronger than ever.

“I have seen what it takes at this level and when we come back during the summer I want us to be ready to try to go back up at the first attempt.

“There is a lot of work to be done between now and then but I am looking forward to it.”
