The Cobblers are expected to add a Premier League right-back to their squad, signed on a season-long loan deal, in the next few days.
Town are in the market for a right-sided full-back following the release of Leon McSweeney at the back end of last season.
Connor Roberts, who has signed professional terms after completing his scholarship in the youth system, is seen by manager Chris Wilder as an option in that position.
Although primarily being viewed as a centre-back by the current boss, Ben Tozer finished the season as the team’s first-choice at right-back with McSweeney on the bench.
Wilder favours adding a new face in the position and is close to securing a deal for a Premier League youngster to spend a year at Sixfields, while talks are also at an advanced stage with an experienced left-back.
“There are still a couple of gaps that we want to fill but we’ve been pretty successful with all of our targets,” said Wilder, who also confirmed he will keep trial players to a maximum of two during the period in which the teams play friendly matches.
“We think we’re in a really good place to start pre-season on Thursday.
“We’re confident we’ll add one more player before the end of the week.
“We’re an attractive proposition; we’re an established football club that a lot of people think will go quite well next year.
“Once we get these next couple in then we’ll be set to go right the way through pre-season. I’m a big believer in it starting now.
“If there’s a player out there that jumps out at us then we have the ability to go and get them but we’ll have 20 or 21 players ready to go when pre-season starts.”
