AIDY BOOTHROYD believes Anthony Charles will bring vital character to the dressing room after confirming the defender has renewed his contract at Sixfields.
And Boothroyd also confirmed Northampton Town beat off competition from several other interested parties to secure the services of the former Aldershot Town man.
Left-sided centre-half Charles put pen to paper on a one-year deal with the Cobblers, following in the footsteps of fellow defender John Johnson who also committed himself to the club this week.
The 31-year-old brings a wealth of experience and leadership skills to the squad.
Boothroyd said: “I am really pleased to have Anthony on board.
“I was keen to sign him on a longer deal as soon as he came to train with us in January but we wanted him to prove his fitness and he did that for sure.
“He is in very good shape, he is a good character and I have been very impressed with him, both as a player and a person, and he is a good character to have in the dressing room.”
Charles is a veteran of more than 350 senior appearances and certainly improved as his time at Northampton went on over the back end of last season, playing the full 90 minutes of the final two games of the season alongside Clarke Carlisle.
