Aidy Boothroyd was pleased with the character and spirit of his Cobblers players as they rescued a point from an entertaining draw with Dagenham & Redbridge.

Luke Norris, who was signed on loan from Brentford on Friday, got his spell off to the best possible start with a poacher’s goal after 19 minutes to put Town in front.

A superb Zavon Hines strike and Rhys Murphy’s header put the Daggers in control at the break as the hosts paid the price for a poor period of play for the second game running.

Home captain Ian Morris scored his first of the season on the hour mark to secure a 2-2 draw that, while entertaining, will have done little to improve the general morale of the supporters, whose team remain in the Sky Bet League Two relegation zone.

It also represents the first time Northampton have failed to record a win against Dagenham, with the Essex side taking a point off Town at the seventh time of asking.

Boothroyd, though, declared himself pleased with the spirit shown by his players in recovering from the double-blow inflicted on them in the space of three damaging first-half minutes.

“I was quite pleased with how we played in the first half an hour of the game, we only limited them to a couple of chances, if that,” he said.

“We played some good stuff and were exactly what I want us to be. The goal from Hines is a very good goal and we probably won’t get another one like that for a while.

“For the second one we’re sort of feeling sorry for ourselves really and it’s another one right before half-time.

“We’re conceding in pockets and there are enough senior players on the pitch to make sure we keep a 1-0 scoreline at 1-0.

“If they got everything right they wouldn’t be here but we showed good character and spirit to come back from 2-1 down and score again, against a side that are very good on the counter-attack, we had to be brave to do that.”
