Construction on the long-awaited permanent outdoor practice area will begin at the County Ground this month.

As reported in today’s Northants Telegraph, planning permission has been granted to transform the former bowls club at Wantage Road into a self-contained nets facility.

The club’s stated ambition is to become the best non-Test match ground in the country and a non-playing area practice area will be another step towards that target.

Chief executive David Smith said: “We’re delighted that we’ve got the go-ahead.

“It’s been a priority since I began my job here and it’s about time we got it done really.

“This facility will provide the club with another fantastic asset for all cricket playing visitors to the County Ground, and forms a major part of our long-term plans for all cricket in Northamptonshire.”

The intention is for the nets to suitable for purpose for the start of the 2013 domestic season with the current practice wickets in front of the scoreboard being kept in use for the foreseeable future.
