Ben Duckett is closing in on a big record after the young batsman continued to pile on the runs on day two of the County Championship Division Two clash with Sussex.

Duckett, who resumed on 178, and survived a couple of scares as he moved to 282 not out by the time rain brought the day to a premature conclusion.

The 21-year-old’s tally is the eighth highest in the history of Northants and he will have an eye on the record on day three if skipper Alex Wakely opts against declaring.

Mike Hussey’s 331 not out against Someset at Taunton in 2003 remains the County’s highest individual score.

But Duckett is playing with the confidence to suggest that he could eclipse that total if Northants opt to plough on and if others can stay with him.

If Duckett reaches 300, he will break the record for the earliest triple century in an English summer, which currently stands at April 18.

His heroics have helped Northants into a comfortable position and they will enter day three on 481 for seven, with Richard Gleeson also in the middle.

Josh Cobb (24) and David Murphy (31) were Duckett’s main batting partners on day two as Sussex continued to struggle with the ball.
