His 110 - bettering his previous best of 99 - ensured the home side ended they day happier despite an impressive five-wicket haul for Jack Brooks.
Brooks bagged 5-61 in 19.3 overs on a day when he was the clear pick of Northamptonshire’s bowlers.
Ross Whiteley contributed 83 before the hosts were finally dismissed for 286.
And with Stephen Peters, Rob Newton and Kyle Coetzer all falling cheaply in the reply, it was definitely Derbyshire’s day.
