Peters wants in on the 50-over action

The opener, who made his first limited overs appearance of the season in the friendly against New Zealand A, is generally confined to the four-day game.

But a solid half-century in the 70-run defeat, combined with a batting order that misfired badly against Worcestershire earlier in the week, could lead to a recall and Peters hopes that scenario comes to pass.

He said: “I’d like to (be selected).

“Hopefully if the opportunity comes up I’d like to.

“I enjoy playing 50-over cricket and I’d like to be out there playing it this season and if Rips (head coach David Ripley) gives me a call over the weekend and says I’m involved next week then good.

“I don’t think I’ve done too badly over the years.”

Peters missed the LV= County Championship defeat to Somerset with a calf injury picked up down in Hove and he commneted that it was good to be back out in the middle.

“It’s nice to get back out there.

“I played for the seconds last week and I’ve been fit for 10 days or so.

“It was mentioned about being out for a month but it was always going to be just the one game.”

As for his return to senior action, Peters admitted he had nothing but admiration for the batting of the Black Caps who amassed an astonishing 424-7 in their 50 overs.

“There was some serious striking of a ball,” Peters said.

“We had slightly limited resources with respect to the guys who played but there was some seriously clean striking.

“The ball was going 20 metres over the rope regularly and there weren’t many mis-hits out there.

“It was very impressive. They just stood very still and hit it very cleanly and we didn’t have a lot of answers.”
