A grinding day’s cricket saw Durham post 265-5 after winning the toss and electing to bat, a position that leaves them marginally in front.

And the Northamptonshire captain commented that is was his charges’ application that was the most pleasing aspect.

He said: “It was a tough day, a long day in the field, but to keep them to two and a half runs an over was a good effort and we hung in there well.

“We probably deserved to have them six or seven down which might have been a fairer reflection of the day’s play but overall it was a good, hard day’s cricket.

“I was pleased with how the lads stuck at it. It’s very easy to have a good first two sessions and then fade away after tea but we didn’t do that.”

Much has been made of the rise in standard now that the County are plying their trade in the first division of the domestic game, but Peters stated that he wasn’t surprised in any way.

He continued: “It was attritional cricket but nothing that I didn’t expect really.

“Sides will look to bat for long periods of time and we have to deal with that.

“If we can get a couple of wickets early in the morning then we’ll be right in it.”

And in conclusion, he said: “I’m pretty pleased with out first day.

“I would’ve liked a bit more but pleased nevertheless.”
