Stephen Peters said that it was a day of “highs and lows” for Northamptonshire after Yorkshire closed on 328-7 after day one of the LV= County Championship encounter at Headingley.

The home side had been reduced to 57-3 but recovered in some style to post a very competitive total thanks in the main to an unbeaten century from Gary Ballance.

And the visiting captain was a touch deflated when he said: “I thought we bowled very, very well and had them on the rack at 60-3 at one stage felt that we if we could’ve got a couple at that stage we would’ve been right in the box seat.

“I think we’d be lying if we said we bowled our best particularly in the middle session and then we’ve dragged it back a bit in the last session with four wickets.

“We missed two or three chances and it does happen.

“Overall I’m slightly disappointed with the day as I felt we could’ve done a little better.

“A mixed day really.”

And he had words of praise for Ballance’s innings which was a study in concentration and technique as he didn;t give any chances and put away anything offline in a very efficient manner.

Peters added: “He’s played very nicely, played really well. I think there’s enough in the wicket that you’re going to play and miss occasionally as there’s enough there in the right area.

“If he did play and miss he’s shrugged that off and got on with it.”
