Injury forced Northamptonshire to make two late calls before deciding on their side for the LV= County Championship clash with Derbyshire today.

In-form opener Stephen Peters and fast bowler Luke Evans missed out after fitness tests this morning with both players suffering back problems.

Head coach David Ripley explained: “Stephen has a bit of a back disc problem but was close to playing and it was a tough call as to whether he was fit to go.

“But Barry (Goudriaan) our physio thought it wouldn’t ease and he might struggle to make it through the four days.

“Rather than run the risk of losing him for the rest of the season we had to leave him out for this one.

“Luke was down to play but he struggled a bit overnight and when he arrived this morning it was clear he wouldn’t be able to bowl 15 or so overs in the day and we replaced him with Lee Daggett.

“It’s a shame for both players for different reasons.

“Stephen has obviously been in good form recently and Luke has taken his chance in the side and bowled well down in Southampton.

“He would have been looking to follow that up here and it is disappointing he won’t get that chance.

“To have two players miss out on the day of a game is a tough break.

“And as it happened in the one-day game a week or so ago as well I guess we’re on a bad trot at the moment.”
